Barmer: Barmer is emerging as a model for rural development, driven by Cairn Oil & Gas, Vedanta Ltd., through its focused initiatives across healthcare, education, skilling, agriculture, and women’s empowerment. By aligning with Vande Ganga Jal Mission and India’s development goals, Cairn is building resilience, opportunities and prosperity in one of the country’s most energy-rich regions.
Skilling Youth and Reviving Farmland
Cairn has trained over 20,000 rural youth through its Enterprise Centres, equipping them with vocational, digital and soft skills, for stable employment with a monthly income of ₹12,000-₹15,000 and reducing migration. Under its Agri-NRM initiatives, Cairn has converted 5,177 acres of desert into fertile land, supporting 5,500+ farmers with drip irrigation, chilli and vegetable cultivation and soil health initiatives. Construction of 1,348 earthen bunds, 41 ponds and 115 rainwater harvesting structures has led to the conservation of 184 crore litres of rainwater, supporting groundwater recharge and climate resilient farming.
Expanding Healthcare Access and Quality Education
Healthcare has become more accessible in remote areas, with seven Mobile Health Vans and specialist OPDs reaching 21 lakh people annually across Barmer and nearby regions. Cairn has supported Community and Primary Health Centres in Ravva, Andhra Pradesh, and Suvali, Gujarat, improving access to treatment for chronic diseases. In education, Cairn has transformed over 400 Anganwadis into Nand Ghars, providing nutrition, clean infrastructure, and early learning to thousands of children. Additionally, 38 schools equipped with smart classrooms and ICT labs are enhancing digital education for over 9 million students, ensuring rural children gain access to quality learning tools.
Empowering Women and Supporting Livelihoods
Cairn’s commitment to women’s empowerment is evident through Jiji Bai Self-Help Groups, training rural women in producing millet-based products and entrepreneurial skills, helping them earn ₹4,000–₹5,000 per month and contributing to ₹2.5 Lakhs in collective group income annually. The Maru Sagar Project has trained hundreds of families in dairy management, organic farming, and kitchen gardening, reducing vegetable expenses by ₹1,000–₹1,500 per family per month while improving nutrition and income security. These initiatives promote dignified livelihoods and strengthen community resilience across Barmer’s villages.
Driving Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development
Cairn Oil & Gas’s integrated CSR strategy, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, demonstrates how targeted, data-backed interventions can drive change in rural India. From skilling thousands of youth and reviving over 5,000 acres of farmland to conserving 180+ crore litres of water and providing healthcare access to 21 lakh people annually, Cairn’s efforts are building a resilient and dignified future for Barmer’s communities, ensuring that the journey from ‘kala pani’ to ‘kala sona’ is a measurable, sustainable reality.
