New Delhi, October 26, 2020: We Are Water Foundation India (WAWFI), a non-profit organisation joined hands with Sulabh International towards the successful construction of a toilet complex at Rajouri Garden Metro Station Pink Line, near Exit Gate No. 2, New Delhi. The public toilet complex was inaugurated on October 21, 2020, in the presence of We Are Water Foundation, Sulabh International and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials.
The initiative is part of Roca’s CSR to emphasise the need for providing hygienic and well-maintained sanitation facilities across the country under the vision of Swachh Bharat. This project will not only target the public transport users but will also support the wide range of audience like slum dwellers, labours, daily workers such as auto-rickshaw drivers, e-rickshaw drivers, etc., who also do not have access to proper sanitation facilities, thus they have to defecate and urinate in the open that contributes in the degradation of the area. Therefore, this initiative addresses the issue for and around the areas.
Commenting on the project completion, K E Ranganathan, Managing Trustee, We Are Water Foundation, India said, “Unavailability of appropriate facilities results in defecating in public that may lead to various infections which is absolutely harmful. Hence it becomes even more crucial to ensure clean and hygienic toilets at public places, especially considering the current pandemic situation. Working towards this goal, we are pleased to associate with Sulabh International and are thankful to DMRC for permitting us to construct a public toilet complex at the metro station allowing travellers to access clean facilities. The expected footfall at this newly constructed public toilet will be around 500 users per day. In the future, we seek similar support from civic bodies/organisations to build public toilets and maximise hygienic facilities for individuals to use them and adhere to toilet manners to keep the surroundings clean. Over the years, We Are Water Foundation is working rigorously to drive desired behavioural change, encouraging toilet usage, and stopping open defecation by offering an innovative and sustainable sanitation model for people.”
We Are Water Foundation India has been instrumental in completing various projects under sanitisation, hygiene, and health pillars across the country. WAWFI is contributing actively to making the country Open Defecation Free by building toilets and making its citizens use it. With a mission to make the public areas open-defecation free and provide safe, clean and hygienic sanitation facilities, the organisation has been continuously working towards developing an enabling environment around the area and its community.
